What First Read does
First Read is a development tool. It covers the entire pipeline from concept to production draft, but its foundation is something no other AI screenwriting tool offers: a Voice Profile built from a structured interview about your specific project.
The interview takes roughly 30 minutes. First Read asks about your series, your characters, the rules you're writing by, and the choices you've already made. It pushes back when answers are thin and asks follow-up questions when something sounds like a default rather than a decision.
From that conversation, it builds a detailed Voice Profile: a document that captures your creative instincts, structural preferences, tonal boundaries, and the specific vision driving this project.
Every tool in the platform runs through that profile. When you brainstorm, the AI challenges you based on what it knows you care about. When you generate an outline, the structural notes reference your stated values. When you get coverage-style feedback, the notes are grounded in what you're trying to build, not what a generic reader thinks "works."
The development pipeline
First Read walks with you through a guided pipeline tailored to your format:
Concept and logline. Sharpen the premise. First Read interrogates whether the concept actually delivers what your voice profile says you're after.
Beat sheet. Build the structure. The AI evaluates your story architecture against your own instincts for pacing, complexity, and tonal control.
Outline. Scene-level development with structural notes that tell you why each beat is doing what it's doing, measured against your voice profile.
Script. Industry-standard FDX export. First Read's notes follow you into the draft.
At every stage, you can brainstorm, get notes, or generate supporting documents (pitch decks, character bibles, one-pagers) that are filtered through your creative DNA.
What makes it different
The foundation is evaluation, not generation. Other AI writing tools lead with output. First Read leads with understanding.
The AI is the collaborator, and you decide what survives. It interrogates your choices and pushes you to write better in your own voice. Vague choices get challenged. Safe options get questioned. You leave every session with sharper work because you made the hard calls.
Built by a working TV writer
First Read was built by Logan Slakter, a 15-year television writer whose credits include Gossip Girl, Quantico, God Friended Me, and Line of Fire (NBC). The tool exists because the most valuable thing in a writers' room is a collaborator who knows how you think, and he hadn't found an AI product that did it.
Currently in open beta for TV, film, and vertical drama writers. Nothing you upload trains any AI model — not ours, and not our providers'. Anthropic and OpenAI are used under commercial API terms that prohibit training on customer content, and we monitor those terms for changes.
