Why I built this

I have written television for fifteen years. Gossip Girl. Quantico. God Friended Me. NBC’s Line of Fire.

For most of that time, the way you got read was that somebody who did not know you picked up your script and decided. That changed. Access narrowed, and it started running through your network rather than your actual work. I spent a year on the outside of it.

What I kept coming back to was that the thing I had built over fifteen years, a voice, the particular way I break a story and write a scene, was the one asset nobody could see without reading two hundred pages. There was no way to show it. There was no record of it.

First Read is my attempt at that. The writer stays the author of record. We evaluate and preserve voice rather than replace it. It is early. First Read is still evolving and as a founder, so am I.
